“The triumph was complete…. The audience left the theater moved and seized by an admiration that quickly won all Paris.”

So runs an account of the premiere of the Stabat Mater by Gioachino Rossini, the composer of operas including The Barber of Seville and William Tell. Ever since, this moving progression from lament to affirmation, in music with operatic beauty and power, has remained a beloved part of the choral repertoire. The Choral Society of the Hamptons brings it to East End audiences with the heartfelt interpretation of our music director, Mark Mangini. The program also will include well-known opera choruses from Cavaleria Rusticana, and the march from Nabucco, which is so affecting it often is considered the real national anthem of Italy.
