Stabat Mater the hymn, one of the most powerful and immediate of extant medieval poems, has been set to music by many composers, with the most famous settings being those by Palestrina, Pergolesi, Joseph Haydn and Gioacchino Rossini. In the sixteenth century, the sequence motet was a favorite form among important musical composers. During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the Stabat Mater inspired large works for chorus and orchestra.
